Growing Tips For
Gymnocalycium mihanovichii variegata
Gymnocalycium mihanovichii variegata is famous for its lack of chlorophyll, which results in a variety of bright colours like pink, yellow, orange, and red. The variegation adds an additional layer of visual interest, with patches or streaks of different colours appearing on each specimen.
1. Light
This colourful Gymnocalycium cactus contains less chlorophyll than ordinary cacti, making it less tolerant of strong sunlight and prone to sunburn if exposed directly. It should be placed on an east- or north-facing balcony or windowsill, away from harsh midday sun.
If kept in low light for extended periods, its colours may fade and the body may shrink.
2. Watering
Use "soak and dry" method.
Water every 2–3 weeks in spring/autumn.
Reduce or pause in summer >40°C.
Stop watering below 10°C.
3. Temperature
This cactus prefers a warm environment, ideally between 15–35°C.
Note: It tolerates heat well but dislikes intense ultraviolet light, which can cause sun damage to the body.
In winter, protect it from the cold — the temperature should never drop below 5°C, as it is vulnerable to frost damage.
Move it indoors during cold spells, ensuring the area remains well-ventilated.
4. Soil
Use a well-draining, airy sandy mix — such as cactus or succulent compost blended with perlite and coco coir.
A slightly acidic to neutral pH (around 5.5–7.0) is ideal.
